Mandalay

Royal capital of pre-colonial Burma until 1885, when it fell to the British and the king was deposed. "Mountains of Burma" picks up the colonial cliché — "the road to Mandalay" — to unsettle it, setting Kipling's romantic distance against the realities of a brutal frontier.
